Fragmented and manual planning

Shift and resource management at the San Sisto plant was performed without a centralized system. Each team leader planned based on their own experience, without a shared vision. This created coordination difficulties and slowed down the entire decision-making process.

Discussing business data
Dependence on the memory of those responsible

Operational decisions were heavily dependent on the personal knowledge of team leaders, who had to mentally recall crucial information such as operator skills, preferences, physical limitations, and availability. This approach was neither sustainable nor scalable.

Long times for operational management

Shift planning was time-consuming, placing a heavy burden on managers. Unexpected changes or unexpected absences required complex and often delayed manual interventions, impacting productivity.

Ineffective internal communication

Communication between managers and operators was poorly structured and often one-way. Digital tools for real-time information exchange were lacking, which limited transparency and reduced staff engagement in factory life.

The solution: implementing AWMS for more agile and integrated management

To address the operational challenges of its San Sisto plant, Nestlé Perugina decided to undertake a digital transformation of its workforce management, adopting AWMS, the workforce management platform developed by AzzurroDigitale. This decision was driven by the desire to build a more interconnected, efficient, and transparent factory, in line with the Nestlé Group's innovation strategy.

The primary goal of the implementation was to overcome fragmentation in planning and centralize workforce and production process information in a single digital ecosystem. Thanks to AWMS, it was possible to:

  • Digitize shift and resource planning, making assignments faster and more reliable thanks to constantly updated data accessible in real time.

  • Centralize and integrate information from different company systems—such as SAP for time stamps, Excel for personal data, and Cartasan for physical restrictions—into a single shared platform.

  • Automate the management of holidays, permits, and unavailability, freeing managers from low-value activities and reducing the margin for error.

  • Improve communication between managers and operators by introducing the Azzurra app, which allows you to send direct communications, receive feedback, manage requests, and engage workers with interactive tools such as surveys and gamification programs.

A gradual and engaging approach

The AWMS implementation was designed to be gradual and sustainable, with strong employee involvement from the earliest stages. After a thorough analysis of existing processes, the team:

  • A technical integration process has been initiated between AWMS and existing systems (SAP, Excel, Cartasan), ensuring consistency and continuity of information flows.

  • We organized training sessions for managers to facilitate cultural change and promote informed adoption of the new platform.

  • The Azzurra app was gradually rolled out to all operators, supporting their use and encouraging interaction through useful and intuitive features.

The result was a cohesive digital ecosystem, capable of supporting the plant's operational needs while simultaneously enhancing human capital, with more equitable, transparent, and participatory labor management.

The results

The adoption of AWMS has brought about a cultural as well as operational change, restoring greater autonomy and responsiveness to teams. Thanks to real-time access to updated and reliable information, managers can make faster and more informed decisions, without having to rely solely on experience or disaggregated tools. Communication between managers and operators has become more direct and transparent, facilitated by the Azzurra app, which has simplified the sharing of updates, feedback, and requests. Furthermore, interactive features and gamification programs have increased staff engagement, strengthening a sense of belonging and active participation in factory life.

AWMS is the digital solution that allows you to plan your workforce, both in production and in the warehouse, in a simple and effective way. Thanks to AWMS, you can organize the work of operators taking into account skills, physical limitations and professional development, and always ensuring compliance with company compliance and labor law regulations (rotations, contractual limitations, mandatory rest, etc.).

Furthermore, AWMS helps you keep costs under control, highlighting the gaps between what you planned and what actually happens. It is the ideal tool to increase productivity and support the growth of your employees with job rotation and job enlargement paths.
