In this article, we analyze how to structure governance and AI to transform raw data into highly strategic decisions for production. <\/em><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promise of Industry 4.0 has been clear from the beginning: connecting machines, installing IoT sensors on PLCs, collecting every single bit of information generated by the lines, and <strong>transforming the factory into an information goldmine<\/strong>. Many manufacturing companies have invested significant budgets to digitize their plants and meet the technological <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azzurrodigitale.com\/en\/machine-interconnection-the-beating-heart-of-the-digital-factory\/\">requirements for interconnection.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the operational reality of many companies paints a different picture. Instead of a clean and structured gold mine, we find ourselves immersed in a veritable <strong>data swamp<\/strong>: a chaotic, fragmented, and uncontextualized accumulation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azzurrodigitale.com\/en\/big-data-what-it-is-and-how-to-use-it\/\">millions of raw data points<\/a> that no one knows how to interpret, analyze, or leverage in their daily work. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Data_Swamp_and_how_to_recognize_it_in_the_factory\"><\/span><strong>What is Data Swamp and how to recognize it in the factory<br\/><br\/><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A data lake is a centralized repository designed to host structured and unstructured data ready for processing. Continuing to accumulate information without a logical map leads to &#8220;analysis paralysis&#8221;: production managers are overwhelmed by minor warning signs or irrelevant numbers, ending up ignoring dashboards and relying exclusively on intuition or paper. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.ibm.com\/articles\/ba-data-becomes-knowledge-3\/\">IBM studies on machine data<\/a><\/strong>, up to <strong>90% of the information generated<\/strong> by industrial sensors is never processed, fueling the phenomenon of <em>Dark Data.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Steps_to_Clean_Up_the_Data_Swamp_and_Become_Data-Driven\"><\/span><strong>4 Steps to Clean Up the Data Swamp and Become Data-Driven<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Escaping the Data Swamp does not require replacing the installed hardware but rather <strong>redefining the architecture and priorities for information use.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Define business metrics (Use-Case Driven Approach)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop collecting data &#8220;because it&#8217;s possible.&#8221; Start with concrete factory problems (e.g.,<em> reducing waste on batch X, preventing overheating on extruder Y<\/em>) and track only the parameters essential to solving those critical points. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Contextualize the machine data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An isolated number is background noise;<strong> a contextualized number is knowledge.<\/strong> Every PLC signal must be enriched with contextual metadata: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What product were you working on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which team was on duty?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the status of scheduled maintenance?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Integrate AI and Analytics for Useful Automations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial Intelligence applied to manufacturing serves to filter out noise. Dedicated algorithms can analyze raw data in the background and notify operators <strong>only in the presence of significant deviations or predictive anomalies<\/strong>, transforming millions of rows of data into a single, actionable recommendation. This is the solution we adopted, for example, with Galvanica Digitale in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azzurrodigitale.com\/galvanica-digitale-4-0-dradura-punta-sulla-digitalizzazione-e-la-sostenibilita\/\">project developed together with Dradura Italia<\/a> for electroplating plants.   <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. A data swamp is a degenerate data lake where data has been dumped without adequate governance, rendering it untraceable, dirty, or unusable for operational purposes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do we need to delete old collected data to clear the swamp?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily. The first step is to apply structuring and contextualization tools to incoming data streams. The accumulated historical data can be archived at low cost (<em>cold storage<\/em>) and extracted using machine learning models only when a specific use case is defined.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you convince line staff to use data-driven systems?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By involving operators right from the interface design stage.
